A customer brings in a phone with a failing charging port. We open it, and there is green-white crust on the connector pins and a dull haze across nearby solder joints. Classic corrosion.
We ask the obvious question. Did it get wet? And the answer, honestly and often, is no. It never went in a lake, never got rained on, never had a drink spilled on it.
That answer is usually true. Devices in Missouri corrode without ever being submerged, and the reason is something most people never think about: humidity plus temperature cycling. Here is what is actually happening inside your device during a Springfield summer.
Corrosion does not require immersion
Corrosion needs three things: metal, moisture and an electrical potential. A powered circuit board supplies the metal and the voltage permanently. All that is missing is moisture — and in a Missouri July, moisture is in the air all day.
Relative humidity here regularly sits high enough that condensation forms on any surface cooler than the surrounding air. Your phone does not need to be splashed. It just needs to be colder than the air around it, briefly, over and over.
Each cycle deposits a microscopically thin film of water on internal surfaces. That film is not pure — it carries dissolved salts from your skin, dust, and whatever else is in the air. It is mildly conductive, and it sits directly on exposed contacts.
The cycle that does the damage
This is the pattern that causes most of what we see, and it is entirely ordinary behaviour:
- Your phone spends an hour in air conditioning and cools well below outdoor temperature.
- You walk outside into humid air. Moisture condenses on the cool device — including inside it, because no phone is truly sealed against air exchange.
- The device warms up and most of that moisture evaporates. Most, not all. What is left behind concentrates.
- Repeat two or three times a day, every day, for a Missouri summer.
Cars make it worse. A phone left in a hot car and then brought into a cold building goes through the same cycle in reverse, with a much bigger temperature differential.
None of this produces a dramatic failure. It produces a slow one — which is why the connection to weather is almost never obvious.
What it actually looks like when it fails
- Charging ports first. They are the most exposed metal in the device and they take the brunt. Symptoms: charging only at a certain cable angle, intermittent charging, or slow charging that gets worse over weeks.
- Speaker and microphone contacts. Callers say you sound distant or muffled.
- Board-level connectors. The ribbon cable connectors for the display and cameras corrode at the contact points, producing flickering, intermittent touch response, or a camera that fails to launch.
- Battery connectors. Resistance climbs at a corroded connection, which can look exactly like a failing battery.
- Buttons. Power and volume buttons that need a harder press than they used to.
The pattern that gives it away is gradual, intermittent decline rather than sudden failure. A dropped phone breaks immediately. A corroding one gets slightly worse each week.
Sweat is the one people really underestimate
Skin contact adds salt directly to the equation, and salt is a dramatically more aggressive corrosion accelerator than plain water.
A phone in a pocket during yard work in August, a device on an armband at the gym, or an Apple Watch worn through a humid summer all get a steady supply of salty moisture. Watches take the worst of it because they are strapped against skin for eighteen hours a day.
The same is true of earbuds, which combine sweat, warmth and enclosed metal contacts in one small package.
And then there is lake season
Table Rock, Stockton, the Ozarks — a lot of Springfield devices spend summer weekends near water even when they never go in it.
Boat spray, a damp towel in a bag, and a phone left in a humid cooler bag all deliver moisture without an obvious dunking. If the device did take an actual dip, that is a different and far more urgent situation: power it off immediately, do not plug it in, skip the rice, and bring it in the same day. Corrosion from immersion is a race measured in hours.

How to actually prevent it
- Let your phone acclimatise. Do not pull a cold phone out of your pocket and immediately start charging it in humid air. Give it a few minutes.
- Never charge a device that feels cold or damp. This is the single highest-value habit here — applying voltage while a moisture film is present is what turns condensation into corrosion.
- Do not leave devices in the car. The temperature swing is the whole problem.
- Blow out the charging port regularly. Dust holds moisture against the contacts.
- Take the case off occasionally and let the device dry out properly, especially after a humid day.
- Do not wear a watch or earbuds through heavy sweat and then put them straight on a charger.
Catching it early is the whole game
Early-stage corrosion on a connector is cleanable. Corrosion that has been left to work for six months eats through traces and pads, and at that point you are into board-level repair rather than a clean and a replacement part.

Frequently asked questions
My phone has never been wet. Can it really be corroded?
Yes, and it is common here. Humidity and repeated condensation cycling deposit moisture inside the device without any immersion event at all.
Why does my phone only charge at a certain angle?
Usually either compacted lint or corroded contacts in the charging port. Both are fixable, and both get worse if you keep forcing the cable.

Should I use a desiccant pack instead of rice?
